How to Play
Pai Gow Poker is a popular casino game that combines elements of traditional poker with the Chinese game of Pai Gow. Here’s how to play:
Setup: The game is played with a standard 52-card deck plus one Joker. The game can accommodate up to six players, and each player competes against the dealer.
Deal: Each player receives seven cards, face down, which they must arrange into two separate poker hands: a five-card hand (the “High” hand) and a two-card hand (the “Low” hand).
Arranging Hands: The goal is to create two poker hands that are stronger than the dealer’s hands. The five-card hand must be higher in poker rank than the two-card hand. The Joker can be used to complete a straight, flush, straight flush, or as an Ace.
Comparison: After all players have arranged their hands, they reveal them to the dealer. The dealer then arranges their own seven cards into a High hand and a Low hand.
Comparison of Hands: The dealer compares their High hand to each player’s High hand and their Low hand to each player’s Low hand.
Winning and Losing: If both of a player’s hands beat both of the dealer’s hands, the player wins even money (minus a small commission). If only one hand beats the dealer’s hand, it’s a push (tie), and the player’s bet is returned. If both of the player’s hands are beaten by the dealer’s hands, the player loses their bet.
Joker Usage: If the Joker is used to complete a straight, flush, or straight flush, it is always considered an Ace unless it completes a hand with an Ace, in which case it is considered the highest card needed to complete the hand.
Bonus Bet: Many casinos offer a bonus bet called the Fortune Pai Gow, where players can bet on making a hand of three of a kind or better. Payouts for this bonus bet vary based on the player’s hand.
Pai Gow Poker is a game that requires both strategy and luck, as players must carefully arrange their hands to maximize their chances of winning both the High and Low hands. Understanding poker hand rankings and knowing when to split hands can help improve a player’s odds of winning in Pai Gow Poker.
